Becoming Citizens Summer Intensive Class

Educational Federal Government

What’s Happening?

In the Becoming Citizens class, students learn about United States history, civics, and government with the intention of preparing for the naturalization interview. This course offers expert instruction as well as a unique museum experience as you prepare yourself for the citizenship test.

In this three-session intensive course, museum staff will prepare students to successfully complete the U.S. citizenship test and offer opportunities to engage with experts in the history of Virginia and America and to personally interact with original historical objects, maps, books, and documents.

Students in this course must have permanent resident status and have already submitted or are preparing to submit their N-400 application to become a naturalized citizen.

This series of classes will be held consecutive Thursdays in July (7/10, 7/17, & 7/24) from 6:30 - 8:00 pm)

Pre-registration is recommended, but students can register at the door on the evening of the first class. The class is taught in English so students should possess the ability to read, write, and speak basic English.

FAQs
- Is the class recommended specifically for those who have lived in the US for at least five years or open to all who are interested in learning? The class will be specifically focusing on the content needed to pass the U.S. citizenship test. Students in this course must have permanent resident status and have already submitted or are preparing to submit their N-400 application to become a naturalized citizen.

- Will students be required to take an English-language proficiency test to register? No, we are not requiring a language test to register or attend, but the class is taught in English so students should have the basic ability to read, write, and understand the content coming into the class. All students will receive a workbook as part of the class, and we plan to have two versions available based on the students' English skills.

- Is there a registration limit/registration deadline? The class is limited to 20 students. While pre-registration is heavily encouraged, and as long as capacity is not reached prior to the first class, we will accept day-of, in-person registration at the first class. To guarantee a slot, students should pre-register.

- Is attendance at all three sessions from 6:30-8:00 p.m. required? The classes are 100% free, so students will not be penalized if they cannot attend every session or need to leave early. However, attendance in all 3 classes is required to obtain all the curriculum information.

- Age requirement? 18+
