Meet and Greet with Ray McAllister

Discussion Community Club Literature

What’s Happening?

Our friend Ray is coming back to celebrate an updated edition of Okrakoke! Come by and chat with him during an informal meet & greet where he'll be signing books and talking about writing.

No registration is required but you can reserve a book below!

About the Book:
Ocracoke tells the island’s story from the early days of Native Americans and European explorers to today’s artists, musicians, fishermen and bicycle-riding tourists. Along the way, it shares the stories of Blackbeard the Pirate’s bloody demise, German U-boat attacks off the coast, and the role of the iconic Ocracoke Lighthouse.

NOW IN THE UPDATED AND EXPANDED 2nd EDITION, the author continues the story, from the shocking devastation and continuing impact of Hurricane Dorian to the joyful 200th anniversary of the lighthouse, from the glimpses of famous visitors to the secluded beauty of Springer’s Point, from the moving of structures around the island to themoving of structures upward on pilings, from concerns about the future to the largely forgotten past of Ocracoke’s sister island.

About the Author:
Ray McAllister, former columnist for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, is the author of, among other works, Topsail Island: Mayberry by the Sea, Wrightsville Beach: The Luminous Island, and Hatteras Island: Keeper of the Outer Banks. All have won multiple awards and been updated with multiple editions. He also publishes other writers’ works through Beach Glass Books. (Among the many are books by Richmonders Randy & Barbara Fitzgerald, Anne Moss Rogers, and Roy Robbins, along with North Carolinians Charles Oldham, Jack Sandberg, and Kip Tabb, whose "Looking for the OBX" has just been published.)
