Goodnight Barn Chuckwagon Roundup

What’s Happening?

The Historic Goodnight Barn was built in 1870, by Charles Goodnight at his Rock Cañon Ranch in Pueblo, Colorado. As we begin our journey to fundraising for restrooms and a concession area at the barn, some folks have asked us why we are having the Chuckwagon Roundup at the State Fairgrounds and not the Goodnight Barn as in years past. Primarily it is for logistical reasons. Holding it at the barn required bringing in portable toilets for the event, renting a tent, tables, and chairs. These are all fixed costs that eat into our fundraising efforts from the Roundup. Holding it at the State Fairgrounds saves us about half of those costs. Additionally, our parking situation at the barn is not the same as it was back in 2022 and 2023, so until that is resolved, we lack appropriate parking for hundreds of guests; parking that the fairgrounds can provide in abundance.

Finally, there is a historical connection between Charlie Goodnight at the State Fairgrounds. Goodnight was one of the organizers of the Southern Colorado Agricultural and Industrial Association and the Stockgrowers' Association in November 1871. They began organizing for a massive agricultural fair to be held in Pueblo the next year. That first fair was held October 9-12, 1872, while Colorado was still a territory. This annual fair eventually became the Colorado State Fair. We feel this strong connection between the State Fair and Charlie Goodnight makes the fairgrounds worthy of hosting this event!
