What’s Happening?

Tell & Twine is an interactive storytelling experience and community weaving project led by interdisciplinary artist Ally Karsyn.

About this event
Legend has it, there’s a Hawaiian tradition where someone in emotional distress will sit in a hut and tell their story to seven people at a time until it doesn’t hurt anymore. Go on enough Tinder dates and you might achieve the same effect.

There’s power in releasing what’s weighing on us, in being seen and heard, in coming together. That’s the inspiration behind Tell & Twine, an interactive storytelling experience and community weaving project.

For this workshop, we’ll use writing and storytelling techniques—combined with meditation, deep listening and intention-setting—as tools for self-exploration and expression. You’re invited to find whatever you need to find within yourself.

After going through this initial process of unburdening, each workshop participant will then share a 3-minute story—on repeat—at Benson First Friday on July 1 from 6-9 p.m.

The workshop will take place 1-3 p.m. Sunday, June 26.

Registration is required. Space is limited to 10. This workshop is FREE, supported by BFF's MaMO Artist in Residence program.

MaMO Gallery (pronounced "May-MOH") is a 42' semi-trailer-turned-gallery that travels regionally, parking and partnering with various communities, organizations, and events.

About the Artist
Ally Karsyn is an interdisciplinary conceptual artist and founder of Beacon Story Lab, an award-winning live storytelling series that started in Sioux City, Iowa. In the past six years, she’s helped over 150 community members take their stories from page to stage. She believes the most important story is the one you tell yourself.

Artist’s Statement
Throughout our lives, our stories will continue to grow and change and take on new meaning. They can become pinpoints on a map, a source of strength, our own light within. They don’t have to define us, but they can help us find our way.

We can make meaning of what’s happened and decide how to move forward. We can choose what we release, transform or share. We can change our narrative.

Through art and writing, I attempt to answer some of life’s big questions: Who am I, and how do I exist in the world? How can I connect more deeply with myself and others? How can we see ourselves more clearly as individuals and communities?

My work examines the subtle shifts in how we think, feel and relate to one another—how we explore the edges of identity and find courage, compassion and connection. I look at the fluidity of our existence, reframing what has been to create what could be, holding space to reflect each other’s humanity, our goodness and grace.
