ABOUT

This is our story and why we need your help.
We truly hope you and your families are well, healthy and safe during this unprecedented time. The 15th Annual Sounds of Silence Run/Walk/Stroller-walk will be held May 20, 2023 with virtual run from 5/20 to 5/28

Sounds of Silence is a fundraising committee of the Postpartum Resource Center of New York, a 501(c)(3) IRS recognized non-profit organization.

This fundraising committee was created by my sister Lisa Mary Reilly and I after she experienced postpartum depression during and after the birth of her daughter. I witnessed the terrible suffering that my sister endured, the stigma that of a mental health illness, and the suffering in silence she felt forced to endure. It was something that we both didn’t want other families to go through. So, we made a promise to each other to break the silence of postpartum depression, celebrate our courageous mothers and fathers, and build sounds of hope for all those families who may be suffering.

Our signature event to support the Postpartum Resource Center of New York is the Annual Sounds of Silence 5K/10K Run/Walk, which we held with Lisa Mary until she succumbed to depression in 2014. This loss was heartbreaking, but we were determined to go on. Lisa Mary was my role model, my inspiration and to honor her memory, I vowed to continue breaking the silence and celebrate her each and every day. For years we broke the silence through awareness campaigns, increased participation and most importantly increased the number of moms, dads and families to the Postpartum Resource Center of NY’s services. Then in 2018, my family and I endured another tragedy and heartbreak when my sister, Susanne, lost her battle with mental illness. We were left with the question, with all of our work and awareness of mental illness, how could this happen?  Mental illness is silent, it does not discriminate against anyone. We were again reminded the true meaning behind Sounds of Silence and we are determined to increase the conversation of mental health awareness and connect families suffering from mental illness with the essential resources of The Postpartum Resource Center of NY.

To further ensure our younger generations and their families are educated on mental health and the resources available for those in need, we offer our Take Care of You Initiative. This initiative increases the conversation of mental health awareness and empowerment.

Thank you for your consideration to be part of this important cause on May 20, 2023 as we celebrate the 15th Annual Sounds of Silence 5K/10K Run/Walk.
