What’s Happening?

The Longwood Jazz Ensemble was established in 1980.  A traditional 18-piece big band, its repertoire includes music from all periods of jazz history with emphasis on swing, Latin, and jazz-rock styles.  Directed since 1993 by Dr. Charles Kinzer, it is open to all LU students by audition and presents a series of concerts each year. Following the retirement of Dr. Kinzer, the group is now directed by Dr. David Moore.  In recent years, the Jazz Ensemble has performed in Norfolk, Richmond, Lynchburg, Culpeper, and throughout the Southside region of Virginia.  The group has also traveled to New Orleans, New York, and Washington, DC.  Alumni from the Jazz Ensemble have gone on to become professional performers in Richmond and Northern Virginia, as well as earning graduate degrees at such institutions as East Carolina University and the University of Maryland.
