Haley is the author of The Buffalo War, long regarded as the definitive history of the last war of the Comanche, Kiowa, and Cheyenne natives to keep control of the South Plains. Using rare photos and images, he will explain the cultural factors, political pressures, and tragic, unexpected cross currents that made military conflict inevitable--and determined its outcome.

About the Speaker
Award-winning historian and novelist James L. Haley grew up in Fort Worth, and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Texas at Arlington with a B.A. in Government-Pre Law. He attended the UT Austin School of Law for two years before resigning to pursue a literary career.
He is the author of over twenty books, embracing the history of Texas and the American West, most prominently the biography Sam Houston now in its 7th printing. Among several prizes he has won the Western Writers of America Spur Award twice, and the Texas Historical Commission Book Award twice. He is a member of the Texas Institute of Letters and a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Society.
He is also the author of seven novels, most recently an important new naval adventure series for G. P. Putnam’s Sons. The fourth one, Captain Putnam for the Republic of Texas, which also features Sam Houston, is new off the press.
